2021 Languages and Literatures Awards

Every year, the Department of Languages and Literatures has the honor to recognize a few of our amazing students at Hastings College's Celebration of Excellence. At this year's ceremony, held on April 28, we recognized the following talented students:

Patrick Hudson

Secondary Spanish Education major from Gothenburg, Nebraska

Clara Altman Award for Foreign Languages

Patrick is an aspiring teacher of Spanish who, in the last couple of years, has shown extraordinary progress in Spanish language competence and knowledge of the target culture. His speaking skills in Spanish have increased remarkably in just a short period of time. We know that his passion for the Spanish language and culture will make him a great teacher!

This award was named in honor of Clara Altman, who was Professor of Spanish at Hastings College from 1921 to 1958. It honors a junior who is majoring and/or excelling in a foreign language, but also majoring in another field.

Kyler Samples

English major from Hastings, Nebraska

Stephen Lingwall Senior English Award

Kyler is an aspiring fiction writer who brings dedication and discipline to craft to all aspects of his work as a student. His contributions to class discussion are always insightful and his pursuit of meaningful research projects demonstrates his willingness to explore how we understand the world around us through the stories we tell ourselves.

Stephen L. Lingwall graduated from Hastings College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude and with high distinction in English. An outstanding student and scholar, he received this very award, which was then called the Senior English Award. When Lingwall died in a car accident in 1975, the department changed the name of this award to commemorate him.

Grace Sinsel

Secondary English Education major and Spanish minor from York, Nebraska

Dwayne and Cindy Strasheim Scholarship

From her first semester at Hastings College, Grace has distinguished herself as a deep thinker and enthusiastic learner. She is always willing to challenge herself and support her peers. Recently she presented at the national convention for Alpha Chi, a national college honor society. We look forward to cheering her on as she continues to excel!

This scholarship, endowed by Dr. Dwayne and Cindy Strasheim, is awarded to a rising junior or senior studying English and expecting to continue work related to English after graduation. Dr. Strasheim is Professor Emeritus of English and Linguistics and Dean Emeritus at Hastings College, where he worked for 49 years, from 1965 to 2014.

Lyette Darville

English and Publishing major from Nassau, the Bahamas

Dr. Art and Eunice Langvardt English Scholarship

Lyette is a consistently intelligent and innovative thinker. She has excelled in literature, creative writing, and publishing courses in our department, and played a crucial role in supporting the Hastings College Press, including through her role as co-editor of Spectrum, our literary and arts magazine. She is generous in both supporting her peers and challenging us all to sharpen our thinking.

Endowed by Eunice Langvardt and former Dean of the College and English Professor Dr. Arthur Langvardt, the Langvardt Scholarship is a financial award for an outstanding junior English major. The Langvardt Scholar works closely with a member of the English faculty on a special project and presents the results in a public forum in their senior year.

Congratulations to all of these talented and hard-working students!
